Reporting Medical Provider Discrimination
- Medical Discrimination Fact Sheet
- Medical Discrimination Fact Sheet
No one should have to experience discrimination when seeking health care. If you've experienced harassment or discrimination because you are transgender or nonbinary—such as misgendering, refusal to use your chosen name, or not being housed according to your affirmed gender—you can take action.
Local, state, and federal laws generally prohibit discrimination in places such as hospitals, doctor or dentist offices, and drug-treatment facilities. Licensing boards also have standards of conduct that prohibit providers from discriminating or behaving unprofessionally.
Reporting discrimination is important not only to help yourself, but it also helps to ensure that it doesn't happen to anyone else in the future. Below are state-specific places to report discrimination. Use "Other" if your state is not yet listed.

Virtually all major insurance companies recognize that transgender-related medical care is medically necessary and have a written policy describing their criteria for when plans they administer will cover it. Below is a list of such policies.
The fact that an insurance company is listed below does not mean that your particular plan will follow these guidelines. You must look to your individual plan to determine if transgender care is covered or excluded. Only if it is covered will the policies below apply.
Medical policies are frequently updated. Please contact us if your company's policy is not listed or is out of date.

Many states prohibit health insurance plans from denying coverage for health care simply because it is transgender-related. In most cases, this means that explicit exclusions for transgender health care are prohibited in these jurisdictions.
These protections will not apply to all health plans in a given state. See our Trans Health Insurance Tutorial section on Understanding Your Plan for more details.

In the 1960-70's, there were many gender clinics at academic medical centers throughout the United States. They have made a resurgence in the face of widespread medical consensus that transgender-related medicine is appropriate treatment for gender dysphoria.
